Aztec Tattoos

There were many ancient tribes that showed art through tattoos. The Aztec group was one of the most advanced when it come to tattoos. The Aztec left a powerful legacy with beautiful symbols. Aztec tattoos were an art form that held great importance in their culture. They took pride in art and put forth allot to developing the arts. Aztec tattoos are known for their complexity and elaborate patterns and are very distinct. Some designs and shapes were considered to be sacred by Aztecs. Most tattoos had a religious, spiritual or ritual meaning to them. Art was always important to the Aztecs. At young ages, children and women were taught the art of pottery making.

One thing which makes Aztec tattoos different from others is that they are an important role in the culture, many times used for rituals. Aztec tattoos were created idolizing Uitzilopochtle, a god worshiped by Aztecs. People today get Aztec tattoos because of their visual appeal but more importantly for the Aztec people.

Putting a tattoo in a specific place on the body was said to be important by the Aztecs. Tattoos were not only put on Aztec adults, but children as well. A tattoo on the chest, stomach, and wrist showed the child’s commitment to a certain god, each having a specific pattern and design. The Aztecs had many gods and strong beliefs and many tattoos were related to a god. This was a way to honor the god or to show commitment to a particular god. Other popular symbols in the Aztec culture were Eagles, Warriors, Princesses, and The Aztec Calendar.

One of the most scared tattoos in the Aztec culture was the sun, being said that the sun was the giver of life. The sun was thought to be heaven. The sun, moon, and stars were often seen in Aztec tattoos and still are today. Many Aztec tattoos are symbols that showed rank among the tribe members, to give thanks or sacrifice.

Virtually everyone has heard about the Aztecs at some point or another. Today we are lucky enough to carry on their culture and live through their beautiful images, images that have been carried on through many modern tattoos.
